Dr. Huynh-Le was selected to be the College of Dental Medicine Annual Fund Scholar in 2001 due to her high level of clinical and academic achievements. Dr. Huynh-Le attended her residency program, Advanced Education in General Dentistry at MUSC, CDM to enhance her dental training and education. She was selected as a clinical instructor at The Division of Fixed Prosthodontics, MUSC, CDM a year later. She practiced general dentistry for two years in St. Petersburg, Florida two years and then relocated to Naples in 2007.

Dr. Huynh-Le is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Association, West Coast District Dental Association, and Florida Dental Association. She continued her education at the Dawson Center, the Pankey Institute, and the University of Florida to enhance her skill set. Tooth extraction or tooth removal is classified into two main types: simple extractions and surgical extractions. Understanding the difference between these types can help you prepare for your procedure. 1. Simple Extraction: This method of tooth extraction is performed on a tooth that is fully erupted in the mouth and can be removed with dental forceps with relative ease. After administering a topical anesthetic and then local anesthetic (Novocaine) to numb the area, the dentist or oral surgeon loosens the tooth by luxating it with an instrument called a straight elevator and then removes it with surgical forceps. Simple dental extraction is typically performed without the need to cut the gum, which is called raising a gingival flap in technical terminology, which is the process of making an incision in the gum and then separating the entire thickness of the gum away from the underlying bone, thereby exposing the actual jaw bone under it. This is done usually for teeth that are carious, damaged, or need to be extracted for orthodontic reasons. 2. Surgical Extraction: Surgical tooth extractions are more complex and are considered for teeth that are not easily accessible, such as impacted wisdom teeth (3rd molars) or teeth that have very little clinical crown left of them. Root tips also need to be surgically exposed sometimes. This method involves making the aforementioned incision in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and the underlying bone. The tooth may be cut into smaller pieces for easy removal. Sometime it is even required to truph the bone surrounding the roots (alveolar bone). Truphing the bone is the process of cutting the alveolar bone around the tooth to loosen the roots further, usually done on roots that are significantly curved or ankylosed (adhered to the bone). Surgical dental extraction is usually performed under local anesthesia, but sedation options are also available usually for wisdom teeth removal or high anxiety patients. Surgical tooth extraction may be needed for impacted teeth that are deeply embedded in the jawbone.
