After completing youth art school, she earned her nursing degree, which launched her career in healthcare.

In 1993, Svetlana and her family immigrated to the United States, settling in San Francisco, where they have since made their home. After obtaining her Registered Nurse license, she worked as a clinical nurse specializing in neurosurgery and orthopedics at UCSF Hospital.

One of Dr. Lim's most meaningful experiences was spending three weeks on an Indian reservation in Tuba City, Arizona, where he and his team provided dentures to the elderly members of the Navajo community. It was an experience that reinforced his passion for helping others. Dr. Lim graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland Dental School in 1998 and went on to complete a General Practice Residency at Long Beach Veteran Hospital.
